I had played under him in a community orchestra in Toronto. I left and I would concur with the players in the Saskatoon Symphony. Too many tantrums from Sanford for me. He may have better luck in Mexico conducting a Mariachi Band.

It is my opinion that this Conductor brought out the best from the material with which he had to work. (For interest; a European friend of mine historically won't attend Saskatchewan concerts based upon his opinion as to what ranks as a symphony orchestra.)

Some famous conductors, such as Koussevitzky and Furtwangler were able to
make great careers in spite of their faulty
baton technique through sheer willpower
and force of personality. The Great Conductors, by the late Harold C Schonberg,
discusses this fact and is quite absorbing to read.

The orchestra I was in from 1975 until it folded in 2002 or so did pops concerts for a time. While they brought in an audience, they wound up costing MUCH more than anything else (aside from when we'd bring in Yo-Yo Ma or someone like that) and were finally nixed. I found them, for the most part, embarrassing and of low quality. I was glad to see most of them go, although I confess some were a real blast. It all depended upon the "star".
